In the next Art class we reviewed painting with watercolors and discussed blending like colors such as yellow and green or orange and red. With a bold blue sky in the background these leaf rubbings came out marvelous!
After listening to and looking at the beautiful pictures of the story of 'Fletcher and the Falling Leaves' 1st graders created leaf rubbings. I had a large collection and variety of local leaves I collected and pressed for the children to use. First we talked about the difference between the front and the back of the leaves, so that when we did a rubbing we'd get the best result. With the back of a leaf facing up it is slid under a piece of paper. Using the side of a crayon you begin rubbing it over the paper, and the veins and edges of the leaf magically appear! We wanted our leaves to appear that they were falling through the sky, so the children used many different leaves and made them twist and turn on their papers.

Spring and Autumn are my favorites times of the year because of the beautiful colors that spread across New England and the art class is a perfect place to celebrate the seasons.
In Kindergarten we talked about what a Landscape is and what Vertical and Horizontal lines are. We looked at some pictures of beautiful Autumn landscape paintings and photographs. Kindergarteners got to come to the board to find and point to the horizontal and vertical lines they saw in the landscapes. Our artwork was made by dipping the edges of matte board pieces into brown paint and then stamping it on the paper to create a horizontal line for the ground and vertical lines for tree trunks. Some kindergartners even chose to add diagonal lines for tree branches. After, we used small sponge pieces and dipped it into red and/or yellow paint, then dabbed it onto our trees to create beautiful foliage. Who knew red and yellow were going to make orange?! To finish off our artwork we dabbed green paint with our sponges onto the horizontal line to create grass and/or bushes. This was also a fun way to create a painting without using a brush. Recently in 1st Grade we looked at apples and sketched large apples onto our papers. Then the 1st graders took long strips of different kind of red printed papers and tore them into smaller bits. The next step was to glue them down inside of our apple drawing to create a beautiful textured collage. Afterwards the 1st graders outlined their apple with black marker to make them 'pop.' These apples came out marvelous! Art is about seeing! In 1st grade we recently studied Vincent Van Gogh. Did you know Van Gogh's favorite color was yellow? He lived in a yellow house, and outside his house grew beautiful sunflowers. Van Gogh would pick them and paint them over and over again until the flowers drooped and peddles fell. We were so lucky to have bright fresh sunflowers in our art room to study. We looked closely and observed the sunflowers. Using pencil to sketch, then oil pastels to add and blend colors. These works came out fantastic and many can be found in our school's Artsonia Gallery. The Kindergarteners have been busy in the art room the last couple of weeks and to kick off Fall we created amazing apple artworks!
Our discussion started with Fall and all the fun things to do in Fall, such as apple picking. We looked at Cezanne's apple still lifes and all the colors of the apples. The art lesson had many components such as tracing, painting, cutting, gluing and observing from life. We are working our fine motor skills while having fun and creating art. We started the year off with self portraits. First we discussed what a self portrait is and looked at some famous artists' self portraits. Then we talked about proportions. The do's and the don't of creating a portrait such as: what shape our heads are, where our eyes are in relation to heads and where our ears are on our head in relation to our eyes and nose. We also talked about hair, eye lids, eye brows, irises, pupils, mouths, neck and shoulders.
After the 1st graders observed themselves in mirrors they began to sketch with pencil followed by a black marker outline. The children were also free to add decorations to the back ground with the marker. The following art class they used color sticks (the inside of a colored pencil, so cool!) to color in their face, hair, neck and shirt. The finishing touch was to add a watercolor wash in the background. As you can see every artist has his or her own unique style. We closed this lesson with sharing, each table of students stood in front of the board with their self portraits while the other students complimented their peers artwork. It was wonderful to hear all the nice compliments the students gave each other. Last week's Kindergarten art class we continued our exploration of line and the color spectrum, but this time we talked about 2D vs. 3D. The children had to first find 1 strip of each color in ROYGBIV and organize them at their spot. After, we experimented and made 3D lines with our strips... zig zags, loopy loops, wavy and all sorts of lines were made! The Kindergarteners then glued their lines down onto a black piece of paper creating a 3D sculpture. What a fun Art class, there was so much creativity and imagination in making these ROYGBIV sculptures. In the last couple of Kindergarten art classes we talked about lines: straight lines, zig zag lines, wavy lines, squiggly lines, dashed lines, scallop lines and dotted lines. We used black oil pastel and created our own lines going from one side of the paper to the other. Then we listened to and sang along with a fun song about ROYGBIV ! The final step to our art piece was to use watercolor paints and create our very own ROYGBIV color spectrum. Here's the song: Art work:
My name is Kristen Beaulieu and I will be teaching art to Wawloam's Kindergarteners and 1st graders. This blog will be used to share art work and what we have been learning about in art class.
I am very excited for all the wonderful things we will learn about art this year! We are going to explore artists and use all sorts of great art materials. Sometimes we get messy so it's a good idea to wear play clothes on art day. |
